What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

They matter and have a contribution to make to anywhere they go in life. They should ask questions and participate in events and campus experiences that will contribute to their growth and development. If they have a goal of going to graduate school, they should do it. Find someone on-campus that will guide and support you with your post-graduation plans.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

My college experience as a first-generation college student was overwhelming. I couldn't go to my parents because they didn't understand the commitment required, financial aid jargon, and the need to spend hours studying. I had to adjust my study habits based on what I had going on in my personal life and learn how to navigate college on my own and with the help of friends. My college experience made me realize what I wanted to do after graduation. I decided I wanted to be a role model and mentor for other students to help them achieve their own educational goals.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Get involved! Take advantage of all the resources available through student advocacy and programming. Ask questions and be critical of information that they may receive. Most importantly try new things, and step out of comfort to gain better understanding of themselves and the world around them.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I did not really understand the academic institution/system. I took classes not needed for my degree and did not understand the requirements or importance of attending office hours and developing relationships with faculty. I also struggled balancing familial demands, school, understanding myself, my needs, and time management overall. Although I had an older brother at 911±¬ÁÏÍø with me, we were both just as lost. We had to figure it out on our own without help from our parents because they were not familiar with how to navigate through the institution.

As an undergraduate student I became heavily involved through my years with the Cultural Centers, the undocumented club on campus, the Multicultural Council, , Orientation Services, PolyTransfer, and the Undocumented Services on campus. Being involved helped me find resources and support from faculty and staff to reach beyond my own limits. If I had not tapped into my community for help in navigating through the academic institution, I would not be where I am today.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Give yourself time to learn who you are. Set high, but attainable standards, and measure your success by those standards. Allow yourself the flexibility to grow and change and want new things in your life. Make temporary sacrifices when necessary for long-term success. You never know what the path you are paving today will lead to, so say yes to every opportunity, and never regret an experience.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I feel a lot of pressure in my role as a first-generation college student to excel in life and lead by example. My family couldn't help me and my parents were not at all involved in the process of 911±¬ÁÏÍøing for schools or choosing my major. I enjoyed college but I had to rely on myself to set my goals and stay motivated to achieve them. I utilized resources at school such as the career center, federal work study, and teachers' office hours in order to excel. I experienced so much satisfaction at graduation, knowing I had invested six years of my life in pursuit of that moment.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I worked hard and did well academically, but nobody was available in my personal life to offer advice on career options, resources, and opportunities. I would've done more in college had I known what resources and options were available. My career path may be different had I known what career options were available. Eventually I learned earning good grades is not enough. Academic success must be supplemented by meeting the right people combined with involvement in the right activities.

First Generation is an identity. We are the first in our family to embark on something never done before. Be proud to be on this journey and along the way you will find that there are others just like us who will support you. Find yourself a mentor and/or fementor!

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I was seventeen when I moved way to go to college at UC Santa Barbara: three hours away from my family. When times were difficult I told myself, "I belong here. You earned this!" When times were good I was often surrounded by friends who are now chosen family.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Three things: 1. You're not alone, 2. It's ok to ask for help, and 3. Learn from your mistakes (because they will happen).

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I was always afraid that others would see me as not good enough for college, so I tried my best to blend in and not draw attention. I wouldn't raise my hand in class, wouldn't volunteer for projects, and wouldn't talk to my professors. When I started to struggle I especially wouldn't seek help, but instead tried fixing things on my own, which usually didn't work well. The reality was that I had a lot of support on campus, I just needed to accept the help.

Be open and take advantage of all of the resources at your fingertips--human, monetary, opportunity. Never let your ego get in the way of asking for help or advice. You don't know what you don't know until you know it! Remember where you came from and give back when you have the capability.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

It was one of the best and most life changing experiences. I would never have been an academic without the love and support from my faculty mentors--who are still a part of my life today. I was also very much involved in university life so I was never bored.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

As a first-generation college student, I had to familiarize myself with all aspects of higher education ranging from courses, resources to services. Connections made with peers, advisors and faculty made the transition much easier and provided many opportunities. Many of the connections were made as I became actively involved on campus, participated in classroom discussions, and asked questions. My mentors, staff, and classmates made graduation possible. What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

College was culture shock. Although I grew up in America, the culture of academia was a place that I initially felt out of place at. Over time, after getting my BA, MA, and PhD at a variety of different institutions, I still ended up feeling this way. This is because I left my geographical womb of Southeast Asia, and much of that region's heritage is still very much within me.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Seek out help from other first-generation leaders. Continue to pursue your dreams in the face of adversity--not everything will come easy and many times there will be road blocks that seem insurmountable but they are not. Maintain your tenacity and fulfill your goals. All of the hard work will pay off.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

It was difficult navigating college--setting up financial aid, figuring out all of the policies and procedures, and locating resources for help and guidance. It was also very rewarding. I had many opportunities that I would not have had if I did not attend college, such as working on the world renowned Rose Float, working internships that guided me toward my career path, and learning valuable business knowledge and strategies I still use today. Striking a balance between work, studying, internships, and extracurriculars was challenging but a valuable lesson. I worked hard and graduated summa cum laude as an undergrad and was the first in my family to obtain a master's degree.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Work hard, be intellectually curious, be kind, be tough, don't take "NO" for an answer, and most importantly be YOU.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I grew up in a very small town so going to college meant going to the "big" city. However, I moved into the dorms, worked hard, applied for every scholarship I could, and poured myself into the activities and opportunities available on campus. By doing this I learned not only the content offered in my classes, but the institution of a university. I was also fortunate to have great mentors from the honors program, faculty mentors, administrative staff, residence staff, colleagues and friends that helped me learn all of the things I did not know. I asked a lot of questions and took every opportunity to learn something new. The key is to find mentors, no matter who they are, and ask lots of questions.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Don't be afraid, intimidated or too proud to reach out and enjoy everything that 911±¬ÁÏÍø has for you. 911±¬ÁÏÍø is a great and beautiful campus. It offers a lot of services and opportunities to enjoy activities. When something gets in the way, don't wait until the question or concern is "big." The sooner that you deal with it, the sooner it is out of your way so you can move on to the other stuff you want to enjoy and need to work on. Know that we are all hear to help and support you. 911±¬ÁÏÍø is a very caring community.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

College opened up my world to so much joy and excitement away from a more stressful world at home. 911±¬ÁÏÍø not only helped me grow academically but it helped me develop myself socially and emotionally. I didn't know there was anything called "first-generation." To some degree I felt shame/embarrassment for the opportunity for going to college. So I didn't talk to many people from my old world outside of 911±¬ÁÏÍø. There was no one outside of 911±¬ÁÏÍø who understood the work or the stress. My classmates and the people of the 911±¬ÁÏÍø community understood. I could rely on them.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

The sky is the limit. While college is a new experience that can sometimes bring what seems like insurmountable challenges, it is an experience that will open up doors. At Cal Poly Pomona, you have access to scholars and faculty who were also the first in their family to go to college. Being here on campus is a powerful experience. Explore it, embrace it, and enjoy it!

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

My parents came to the United States from Mexico in the 1970s in search of the American Dream and a better life for their family. Years later, they couldn't have envisioned their dream manifest itself in a son who would go on to earn a doctoral degree and become a college professor. Although I owe every bit of success to my parents, the road getting here was incredibly challenging, especially when I first got to college. I felt college wasn't made for me. However, after slowly meeting mentors on campus, I persevered. I realized that I needed to invest in my education not only for myself but for people like who my parents who sacrificed so much to get me to that point.

If you need help, ask for it and don't panic. Someone is always here to help.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

It was a little bit scary. Your parents don't really know or understand some of the obstacles so you end up trying to do more on your own than is probably necessary. I didn't use the resources that were available to me since I was insecure about them, and worried that I would look "dumb." Well, I was. I should have asked more questions and used the resources available. If I could do it over, I would be more assertive and take advantage of what's available.

I encourage students to get involved on campus. Make connections with your peers and faculty. If you have the opportunity, join clubs and 911±¬ÁÏÍø to internships. College can be a lonely experience if you're navigating the system by yourself. Expand your network and ask for help. There are many other students who have gone through similar experiences, and there are people who will be eager to help you.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

As an undergrad student, I balanced work, school, and student leadership positions. My most meaningful experience was working on campus at an advising center. The position prepared me for work after college and the expectations that should be set between supervisor and employee. I was fortunate to have a supervisor who supported me throughout my undergrad experience and set me on the path to working in higher education.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Ask questions! If you do not understand how to do something, ask someone. Get to know your professors and fellow students. Learn from their knowledge and experiences. Most importantly, know that the faculty and staff of Cal Poly Pomona are here to help you. We want you to succeed and have a positive college experience. Also, take advantage of the various clubs and programs that Cal Poly Pomona offers. What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

When I started college at Cal Poly Pomona, I felt alone. My friends from high school went to other colleges, so I didn't know anyone on campus. My first year was basically going to class and then going home to study. It wasn't until the middle of my second year that my college experience changed. I joined a couple of clubs on campus and began to meet other people with the same interests. Being involved in campus life and the students I met encouraged, supported, and enhanced my college experience. I didn't feel alone anymore. College isn't just about academics, it's also about meeting new people, learning from their experiences, and becoming a better person.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

My parents always encouraged me to go beyond high school but could offer me little insight into college success. I often sat in classes silent, paralyzed and unable to utter answers to questions posed for fear of my ignorance being revealed. After my first year, I seriously considered dropping out because of feelings of inadequacy and cultural alienation. I was one of a handful of African American students. But I learned the adaptive skills--I mimicked more successful students and their study patterns. I worked collaboratively with others who were better prepared. I sought out faculty mentors that saw my potential and worked tirelessly with me. I wrote down prepared questions and answers to limit my anxiety in class discussions. I began to seek out courses of study that gave me a sense of identity and purpose. I was empowered to learn that people who came from similar backgrounds were often behind in academic skills because they were born into situations of impoverished schools and neighborhoods. Moreover, these gaps in performance came as a consequence of historical trends and discriminatory policies that limited their options and often diminished their dreams. By my junior and senior years, the students who refused to work with me because of my perceived inferiority, now courted by opinion and sought me out as a study partner. Eventually, I graduated with honors. It was a long path with many obstacles but I have reached the point where I can now help others avoid the many pitfalls of being a first-generation college student.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

You are not alone. College is new and can sometimes be overwhelming; if you don’t know something, it's okay to ask questions. Try new things such as meeting others from different backgrounds or join various clubs and organizations. Visiting your professors during office hours is a must -- this helps them to get to know you better. Apply for scholarships; there are so many funds that go unclaimed. Look for opportunities to work on campus because it is convenient and offices will work around your student schedule. Find opportunties to go study abroad as it will help you see the world and broaden your horizons.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

It was scary for me because I felt intimated. I was afraid I would get lost, wouldn't make any friends, or other students wouldn't be friendly with me. I didn't do as well my first year because I did not have good study habits, although I had always gotten high grades from K-12^th grade. College work was different and much more demanding than I was used to. However, I learned to “swim” and got connected with resources and services on campus. Once I found my community and support system, I felt like I belonged.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

It was intimidating at first, trying to navigate this whole new world with its own way of speaking. I threw myself into my studies. It wasn't until I worked on campus that I met friends (some of whom are my lifelong friends) and thrived in college life. I'm glad to have savored as much as I could during my college years.

1. Have an academic advisor review your education plan to ensure that you're on track.
2. Look into any and all grants and scholarships to assist you in paying for your tuition if applicable.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

As a first-generation college student, I had a great experience at Cal Poly Pomona. I was born in Vietnam and the third child of four. I was extremely excited to be the first person in my family to attend a university and ultimately graduated within four years. I had drive because I wanted more for myself and I knew that it would be possible and I wanted to make my parents proud. I had wonderful conversations and office hour visits with my professors who steered me in the right direction and gave me the added support to keep me going when times were rough. Although I didn't get involved on campus because I had a full class load and a 32 hours peer week work schedule, I always wished I had so that I was able to experience all the benefits of attending a university.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

It's important to build a community around you that can help your success. I would not have made it through college without the support of my family, faculty, and staff. They not only supported me in time of need but they challenged me and did not allow me to give up.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

My college experience as a first-generation student was filled with difficulties and success. It was hard to get used to being away from home and living with roommates. I also had trouble with time management and studying for exams. Thankfully, I was part of a first-generation program that helped me and, by the second quarter, I improved in those areas and got involved in a club on campus. This club changed my life and I made friends that I still have to this present day. Without the proper support and intentionally community building I might not have made it through college. I'm forever thankful to those who took time to help and support me.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

As a first-gen student I experienced many challenges. I dealt with the imposter syndrome, home sickness. My family was supportive, but didn’t necessarily understand what I was going through during college. Making connections on campus helped me overcome these challenges. I was able to find mentors that validated my experience and supported me through anything I endured.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Don't give up. Find the drive that can motivate you when you want to give up. It is too easy to walk away from challenges, but the reward you get when you overcome them will stay with you forever. Be open to change and to the opportunities that cross your path. We not only learn and benefit from our successes, but from our failures as well. Ask for help (and keep asking). There are many resources on campus available to you and they can make a huge difference in how you accomplish your goals. Get involved. Being connected to your campus, solidifies your sense of belonging and worthiness of being here. 

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

Though I had tremendous support and encouragement from my parents, I took full responsibility for my education. I got involved right away with Rose Float. I inadvertently created another support network for myself, along with establishing many life-long relationships. Upperclassmen provided advice and were examples of perseverance for me. I got married at the end of my second year and soon became a mother. After the births of my children, I could not be involved on campus as deeply as I had been or take on as many classes, but I gained a new determination. Finishing my degree ensured my ability to support my family and continuing my education fulfilled my calling in helping others on their paths to accomplishing their dreams.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

If possible, join clubs and associations for first-gen students (such as RAMP at 911±¬ÁÏÍø). Being a first-generation college student can feel isolating; it's important to realize that you are not alone.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

It was difficult. I didn't feel like I belonged in college. I enjoyed the learning aspects but I didn't know how to approach my professors, or even if I should. I also quickly realized there were massive gaps in my knowledge of higher education. It seemed that many of my classmates already knew so much because their parents had attended college. I didn't even know the right questions to ask.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Believe that you can accomplish even your biggest, most wishful goals. Almost nothing is as difficult as you expected it to be before you got started, and there is no such thing as a shortcut.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

When I got to 911±¬ÁÏÍø as a first-year student, I felt lost. It seemed like everyone expected me to know about processes and policies that I had never heard of, and I was shy about asking for help because I felt like the only person who didn't know what was going on. One by one, I started to find the people who recognized my value and didn't make me feel self-conscious, and it took me a long time to figure out that a ton of my fellow students felt exactly the same way I felt. I came to 911±¬ÁÏÍø when I was 18, and I finished my degree when I was nearly 30. I never would have finished if I didn't start asking for help and learning more about the resources available to me.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

I am an only child and both of my parents were against me going to college. I was able to let my anger work for me and achieved my goal to earn both of my college degrees. Be proud of what you are achieving. Never let anyone tell you that it is not necessary to have a college degree, especially if you are a woman! Sometimes the going will get rough, but never give up your dream. You will achieve your goal if you keep forging ahead.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

As a late bloomer, going back to school had always been a dream for me. When I went back to college, because of my age, I assumed that the other younger students would ostracize me in class. I found out just the opposite! The younger students gravitated towards me for direction in our group projects. I considered this quite an honor. In addition, I was able to receive help from some of the younger students in my math courses. Math has always been difficult for me. With my tutors, I was able to excel, which is something I will always cherish.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

There's a lot more to a university education than what you learn in class. Learning how to learn new material, research what is known about something and synthesize that information into a coherent description, and communicate that synthesis to others, are the most valuable skills. Whatever your major, look for ways that your classroom experiences help you to be better at it. Learn how to manage your time effectively. Most of all, learn what it means to understand a concept deeply enough that you can 911±¬ÁÏÍø your knowledge in totally new circumstances.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I flunked out after my sophomore year due to family challenges. It took a lot of time and hard work recovering, both financially and academically. I did a lot of jobs I don't want to do again, but doing so made it possible for me to support myself to finish my degree here at Cal Poly Pomona. After that, I have had a wonderful career in graduate school, the aerospace industry, as research staff at UCLA, and now as a faculty member.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Keep in mind that you are a pioneer, exploring an experience new to you and those around you, you may feel you're on your own. There will be times when you will not know where you'll find the money, or how your next step will play out, but keep going & climbing anyway! It took me five years to graduate with my Bachelor's, it took me nine years to complete my graduate degrees. At the time I felt I was behind. Now I recognize I was on my own timeline, just right for my priorities.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I am the daughter of immigrants from Mexico. My father was a farmworker. He brought us to the US when I was 11 years old. My parents completed elementary and middle school education. They always emphasized education and hard work, and encouraged me to aim for college, but as their first daughter, when it was my time to 911±¬ÁÏÍø, they said no to 911±¬ÁÏÍøing to colleges away from home. I applied anyway. I was so excited when my acceptance letter came in the mail, but also scared that now I had to share the news. After many, many, many conversations my parents eventually said yes. I was admitted to EOP and Summer Bridge, and those programs provided me with the support I needed. My strategy to choosing my major was to choose my favorite subject in high school. That tells you how unfamiliar I was with the whole process. After receiving guidance from my EOP advisors, I became Undeclared. Initially it felt like a step back, but it was the perfect major for me. It gave me time to make the choice that was right for me. I didn't have much to go on, so I took the Career Exploration class and found my love for Psychology. This led me to pursue graduate degrees with the goal of  becoming a counselor/Psychologist at a University.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Network and connect. I know, it might feel scary or pointless, or you might feel like you don't have time or energy, but Cal Poly Pomona has many resources and services available to you. The moment you network and connect with something/someone on campus you will truly feel how much you belong here. Everyone on campus is here to help and see you succeed. Please feel free to stop by and visit me at the University Library-you are always welcomed!

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

As a first-generation college student I felt very alone navigating the system all by myself. My parents had no clue about registration dates, add/drop, wait lists, parking permits, school fees & tuition, prerequisites, course reserves, internship requirements, submitting proper documentation for graduation before deadline, or ordering/buying regalia. I had the fake-it-til-you-make-it attitude. I did not realize all of the services that were available, because I had no one to tell me. My first couple of years, I never visited my advisor nor visited my professor's office hours for help and ignored the "join our club" pleas. I was a commuter. I traveled from home to school to work, back and forth every day of the week. I never had time for anything. 

I was so nervous to go to office hours but after chatting with a professor for a bit I realized they were just as human as I was and they genuinely showed interest in me and my story. After that, I opened up to visiting my professors for help. With their guidance, I was able to graduate in three and a half years. 

I also had a great support team at work where I was working as a paraprofessional in my field. People are always willing to help one another if you let them.

• Develop habits that will make you a successful student

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I was incredibly fortunate to have received a phone call by an EOP advisor and be invited to be a part of Summer Bridge. EOP was my academic gift that I always knew I wanted and did not know existed. I am grateful to the EOP staff that recognized my work ethic and potential. They taught and convinced me to look deeper within myself and completed the academic gaps my biological family could not help with. EOP also provided a much needed respite and home away from home. The achievement of earning my college degree, while affirming my desire to be a lifelong learner, led to the discovery and passion of helping others. EOP planted a seed of service, using the tools I learned that are applicable in both personal and professional areas of life. I now have the privilege to change lives as mine was transformed years ago by serving as the EOP Outreach & Admissions Counselor. EOP changed my family tree, literally, which is the root and core reason for its existence, such that we each leave a legacy for the next generation.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

My advice to you as an incoming first-generation college student is to never give up. There will be difficult times throughout your educational years, but always take a leap of faith by completing the job. If you have to work to meet financial needs take your time with your classes, and don't rush your success. Learning is a process and is best to gain knowledge rather than speed through the process. I know for myself, I wanted to finish as soon as possible because of the stress and personal problems I was going through during my bachelor's degree. Nevertheless, now that I look back, I made some changes for my master's. I took it slow and learned every detail from it. I continued to push through with the help of faculty and classmates. Furthermore, make sure you keep in contact with your classmates and meet to discuss class-related information, it is a tremendous help. In addition, get informed about the campus resources and try to enjoy college life as much as you can. 911±¬ÁÏÍø has a lot of activities and clubs to get involved in that you don't want to miss out on.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I am a proud Mexican American first-gen and first-language Spanish speaker. It took me an overall of 7 years as a transfer student to complete my bachelor's degree in Graphic Design. And 10 years after, I recently completed my Master's in Public Administration which took 4 years. The reason why it took long for each degree was because I had to work to provide for myself and my education. I did not have financial support from my parents for my education. But I pushed through despite the obstacles I was going through and managed to complete my bachelor's and master's degrees. In addition, I have been an example to those around me to go to school and complete their college degrees. They saw me as "if she can do it, I can do it too." It is never too late to go back to school and accomplish your dreams and goals. Success is on your hands when you are determined to accomplish a goal. Blessings on all your achievements and I know you will be fine, you got this!

Ask a lot of questions, find the people on campus willing to help, and pay it forward.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I tried and gave up several times. I finally got serious when I was 36 years old and became a freshmen. I still had no idea what was expected and missed important financial aid and enrollment deadlines all the time. However, once I figured it out I didn't stop until I finished my doctorate.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Don't be afraid! Whether it's asking questions, trying to get involved, going to a professor's office hours or asking for someone to be your mentor, don't be afraid. So many great opportunities are available but YOU must take the first step!

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

My college experience as a first-generation student was quite tough. Change is difficult. I was away from home for the first time, had so much pressure from my family and overall felt lost in this new world. I doubted myself and was afraid but could not show that to peers or family. Over time things improved substantially for a variety of reasons and opportunities on campus. I branched out and tried to seek help. In the process I learned how to embrace the changes I was faced with. There were times I felt like giving up but the constant support from instructors, advisors and peers on campus reassured me that I was close to the finish line. In addition, this achievement was not only for me but my family. The look my parents had when I walked across the stage still makes me emotional today. Receiving my degree was a symbol of their struggle, determination and hard work as much as it was mine.

Always ask questions and don't be afraid to ask for resources. There is always someone out there who is willing to help you.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

When I first graduated high school I was admitted to 3 CSUs. I decided to go to Sonoma State University. Before I even began classes, I was lost. I did not know that I needed to register for orientation, how to read my financial aid award, and how to select classes and which ones applied to my major. Everything was so new to me and, after my first semester, I decided to leave school. I ended up coming back to Southern California and began attending Mt. San Antonio Community College. There, I had the same experience and it took me 5 years to transfer out to Cal Poly Pomona. At 911±¬ÁÏÍø I was lucky enough to find people who cared about my success and guided me until the day I graduated.

What advice would you share with our first-generation college students?

Seek out your academic advisor within the first couple of weeks starting at Cal Poly Pomona. We will remember you and will have more time to address your needs, concerns, and fears than if you waited until registration. Even if you don't have a specific question yet, just stop in and say hello. Tell your advisor that you're the first in your family to go to college. It helps us understand your needs and how to help.

What was your experience as a first-generation college student?

I felt like a blank slate. I couldn't ask my parents, and they couldn't help me evaluate colleges and programs. I didn't know what questions to ask or things I should look for. When I arrived at campus, I initially felt that I had less life experiences than my classmates, so it took a little more time to make connections. Instead of focusing on the feelings of difference, I got involved. I became a campus tour guide and a writer for the school newspaper. Getting involved made me feel like a valued member of the community and that I could do anything that non first-generation students could do. I never communicated that I was a first-generation student but I utilized the time of my academic advisers and professors. Consistent visits to their offices is a big reason I was able to succeed.

I am the first college graduate of my family. The first year as an undergraduate was very scary: I did not know how to check for my classes, my grades, my progress, my financial aid. PLEASE contact your advisor on campus and also ask for help from the different offices that support you. Professors are great resources also, even if they are not your academic advisor. Connect with them. They want to know YOU!
